Tip 94 – Ask Yourself Seven Questions

Posted on November 1st, 2007 by Keith Ferrazzi

To be successful, you need to ask yourself some tough questions. Here's a great exercise to get you thinking about your dream job or business. Commit to your answers by writing them down.

These Seven Steps to Success come from Dr. Mark Goulston (http://markgoulston.com), author of Get Out of Your Own Way at Work.

1. What do you love making (product) or doing (service) that has enough value that other people would be willing and want to pay for (your DREAM)?

2. What desire or problem is your product (what you make) or service (what you do) the best answer or solution to (your VISION and MISSION)?

Thought I had all the answers to these questions but further reflection shows me that I haven't. So great timing with this tip Keith and thank you.

As I'm developing my second business plan draft, the 7 questions are of relavant importance to think about and answer for myself. I agree, great timing. Thank you!!

  3. Keith,

This is great for the young entrepreneur that gets lost in the world of trying to make everything work. These couple of questions help me focus on the bigger picture, my dream job!

    Thanks for the Tip.

  4. These are great questions! Someone, I can't remember who, said that "the quality of your life depends on the quality of the questions you ask yourself". I think these are a perfect example of questions that can drive both your business and personal growth.

  6. I've basically asked myself the same questions. The problem I have is that I generally meet only competitors or people who absolutely no use for things I can do. I've done some advertising, but it is very hard to find a target audience. I have gotten far more work from an accidental meeting on a plane than anything else. I also got a job from membership in LinkedIn, a professional networking site.

When I do go to grad school networking events, I tend to end up with the prettiest girl. It's fun, but of little use to my career. It's also a science and tech school, while I'm a social scientist with quantitative skills. Let's face it, biologists, electrical engineers and physicists have little use for social scientists.

So, any suggestions on how I can reach customers? I can't simply rely on word of mouth. Also, I've been told that, in my world "statisticians are a luxury."

BTW, I'm not hypomanic like Ferrazi. I need to sleep 10 hours a night, work about 8 hours and have a family. I certainly won't complain about the last. I quite enjoy being a father and playing with the kids. So, my time is very limited.

  7. what if it's hard to answer the questions concretely,

say you have the dream, the vision but the rest fails

how to progress? have difficulties in answering the next questions, recommondations in that direction are welcome

    thanks

    Seyda

  8. How oh how do you proceed, when you're only answer to #1 is "I don't know." I only know what I don't want, but the only think I've ever found I love and can do 24/7 is learn.

No joke. I love to set a task to learn and then master it and move on. If I lack the aptitude to learn it I never find the interest.

    # 1 I don't know.

  9. Simple enough I printed the seven tips and posted by the computer and bought the book. Have a great week.
