Is Free the New Black?

Posted on May 21st, 2009 by Keith Ferrazzi

Thanks with all the help through Twitter and FB with my prep yesterday. Ready for the result? Watch the clip!

For those who don't feel like watching, the basic point:

"Free works as a promotion...all marketing is generosity. You are trying to build a relationship with the consumer. If you lead with free, you get permission to actually have a conversation to follow it up.

We have got to get reconnected with the consumer."

  1. Keith,

Great stuff - love your new terms. Freemium is fantastic. Looking forward to your Philly event. Flying all the way from Ireland for it.

    Cheers

  2. Great job, Keith! It's so refreshing to have your perspective on CNBC.

  3. Hi Keith!
Great clip, I forwarded it to my colleagues at Firm Ground! I love the concept of generosity marketing. We are offering "free" design services to get connected and build relationships with new clients. Our ability to engage in discussion allows us to start the process of programming and get to the value services once a project has proven to have validity.

  4. @Ted - WOW! Well, then we definitely have to meet. Contact Ryan Geist, my community manager @ ryan at ferrazzigreenlight dot com and make sure that we connect in Philly. Look forward to meeting you, friend!

@Nicole - Thank you. I was the only one without a tie on that segment. What do you think - should I wear a tie next time, or keep it biz casual?

@Tom - "Free" is a great tool, but I'm still skeptical of its value as a business model. The "Freemium" model is my favorite so far in this new realm of pricing models.

    Thanks for your comments!
