As a former journalist, I can tell you one of the simplest ways to connect with a reporter is to call them up and offer to take them to lunch. Journalists make very little money, work under stressful deadlines, and don't get the respect they used to. Remember that and play up to those needs: treat them well, give them respect, and cultivate a relationship with them. They'll appreciate it.

And do it before you need them.
