“Ask Keith” Video: Can Your Tips be Applied to Networking in Asia?

I was asked the question:

Are the tips that you give for successful networking specifically suited for the Western culture, or are they applicable to Asia as well?

What tips do you have for networking in Eastern cultures as oppose to Western?

  1. As a boy growing up in the east, one thing I know for sure is that although you may think you don't like something that is offered to you (food for instance, or an "onsen" experience), don't blatantly turn it down immediately. Just showing your keenness on trying a little bit is a huge sign of respect and openness, especially when they just genuinely want you to enjoy something they enjoy and not to see you suffer. Just a thought :) -asian boy in NY-

  2. Living in China, I quickly learned that as an American businessman, my business contacts and partnerships were furthered down the road via relationships ('guanxi'). The more meals we shared, the more time we spent in one anothers homes and with families, the deeper the connection and the more productive the result. Plus, it is a lot more fun getting to know people rather than simply conduct business.

  3. I find that in my business as well as life, it is better to sit dow n over a meal and get to know someone before you commit to do business with them.

  4. Sharing meals and socializing key to building networks. And little things like attentively accepting a business card and understanding that Yes sometimes doesn't mean Yes.

  5. Quick tip: once you receive their business card, carefully analyze it (don't forget the other side) before giving yours. Also, in South Korea, receive their card with both hands.

  6. We hosted a dinner at our home last night where we had 32 people from 17 different nations (all from the same company) at the meal. The interaction, sharing of ideas and friendships built were priceless. I think we Americans can learn a thing or two from around the world.
